The dedication may refer to his friend, the painter Eugène-Camille Lambert (1871-1948). When Ziem died, he helped his widow to draw up an inventory of his studio.
Félix Ziem depicted this squadron on several occasions, in connection with the official visit by French President Émile Louvet to the French and Italian fleets in Toulon harbour on 10 April 1901, celebrating the diplomatic rapprochement between the two countries at the start of the 20th century.
