BIBLIOGRAPHY
G. Séailles, Alfred Dehodencq, L'homme et l'artiste, Paris, 1910, no. 55, plate XVI (The Spanish Dancer).
Gabriel Séailles dates the painting to the artist's first visit to Spain between 1850 and 1855.
His stay in Madrid was a decisive turning point: it was there that he discovered the great Spanish masters, in particular Velázquez and Goya, whose legacy had a strong influence on his painting. His many trips to Spain, and also to North Africa, enriched his inspiration and confirmed the singular character of his work. Our Spanish Dancer marks his taste for the lively life of Madrid.
