Our painting is to be compared with the painting of Othello that Dehodencq presented at the Salon of 1873, n° 441 (canvas, 150 x 200 CM) now kept in the museum of Meaux.
Dehodencq trained as a painter with Léon Cogniet from an early age. After being injured during the revolutionary events of 1848, he left France for Spain, where he settled permanently from 1849.
Considering himself to be the last of the Romantics, Dehodencq liked to draw on his favourite authors to illustrate certain key passages. Shakespeare wrote Othello in 1604. Dehodencq chose to depict the moment when the hero recalls the trials and journeys that marked his life: military campaigns, captivity, distant lands and extraordinary adventures. Fascinated by these tales of exoticism and bravery, Desdemona falls in love with him as she listens to him recount "the dangers he had crossed". This scene, which combines romanticism, eloquence and a taste for elsewhere, was particularly appealing to our artist, whose pictorial universe was deeply nourished by Shakespearean theatre and the orientalist imagination.
