Description
Attributed to Ernestine CAROUGET (active in Paris in the mid-19th century) Self-portrait Original canvas 69 x 55,5 cm Unframed Monogrammed on the left "EC" (linked); bears a recent inscription in blue ink on the reverse of the stretcher "EC Etienne Chavanne" (E and C linked) Paintings by Ernestine Carouget, a portrait painter, are rare (only one painting is known of her, signed and dated 1849, presented for sale at Dogny Auction in 2009). The artist's clothes and the furniture date our painting to the 1830s. Ernestine Carouget painted her self-portrait as a portraitist around ten years before exhibiting at the Salon in 1845.
