Description
Enamel plate painted in grisaille with flesh highlights depicting Perseus petrifying his enemies.
Limoges, mid-16th century, workshop of Léonard Limosin (c. 1505 - c. 1576/1577)
H. 12 cm, L. 14.5 cm
Minor edge damage
Taken from chapter 5 of Ovid's Metamorphoses, the scene depicts Perseus transforming his enemies into stone statues (5, 177-209). To avoid being overwhelmed by the number of his attackers, he resorts to a magical device, pointing the Gorgon's head at those who approach him and whom he transforms into stone statues: six named and characterised figures, including one from his own camp, and a crowd (two hundred men) of attackers from the plebs, represented in the background of the scene.
