Description
Hasdrubal, Hannibal's brother, at the hands of the Romans Oudenaarde tapestry in wool and silk Around 1600 H. 336 cm, W 382 cm Despite his courage in battle, Hasdrubal lost the Battle of Metaurus, which, according to Titus Livius, was the bloodiest battle fought by the Carthaginians during the Punic Wars. The tapestry is framed by a wide and interesting border showing the wonders of the ancient world in medallions, as well as the description in Latin in a larger medallion in the centre of the upper part of the border of what is about to happen: CLAUDIUS NERO CONSUL CAPUTAS DRUBALIS IN CASTERA HANNIBALIS PRO IICI JUBET (the Consul Claudius Nero orders Hasdrubal's severed head to be thrown into Hannibal's camp). Materials and condition : Woven in wool and silk (wool warp - 5 warp threads per cm - wool and silk weft), the tapestry shows some wear and old restorations. Bibliography: - An identical tapestry is reproduced in: Ingrid De Meûter, Tapisseries d'Audenarde du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle, 1999, p. 185. The two tapestries do not have the same medallion in the upper border. - On the Battle of Metaurus, see Geoffroy de Galbert, Hannibal, Scipio et les guerres puniques dans l'Art et l'Archéologie, 2013, pp 271-278.
