Chest of drawers in flower marquetry, the front opening to three drawers, the top decorated with a basket of flowers in a large central reserve with double framing with ovals with bouquets of flowers in the corners, chimeras and palmettes resting on wide curved uprights ending in arched legs decorated with foliage with simulated hooves joined by a scalloped apron, with a handwritten inscription: repaired by Canal in 1889 and a commercial label of the cabinetmaker F. Canal in Mâcon. Canal in Mâcon; (accidents and restorations).
Dauphiné, Louis XV period
H. 82.5 cm, W. 126 cm, D. 74.5 cm
Provenance :
Château de Ternant
The marquetry of this chest of drawers is in keeping with the style of Grenoble cabinetmaker Thomas Hache (1664-1747), both in terms of composition and use of motifs. The top is similarly divided, the frames are the same, and the decorative elements are very similar, such as the palmettes, the simulated gadroon motif above the flower basket and the canopy motif on the sides. The shape of this chest of drawers with its very wide uprights has not yet been recorded in any of Hache's work, so if this chest of drawers were by Hache, it would be a piece of unprecedented architecture.
