Pierre LENORDEZ (1815-1892) The Flying Dutchman Bronze with patina Bearing a cartouche on the terrace: "Flying Dutchman born in 1846 of Bay Middleton and Barbelle mère de Vautranys (?) winner in 1849 of the derby and of the St Léger in 1860 of the Coupe de Rallie (?)". Signed on the terrace "P Lenordez" and "Duplan et Salles" (bronze factory) H. 31 cm, terrace: 32.3 x 10.5 cm On a rose marble base: 13.5 x 35.5 x 3 cm The Flying Dutchman (1846-1870) was an English thoroughbred racehorse and stallion. He raced for four seasons between 1848 and 1851, winning all but one of the fifteen races he entered, including the Derby and the St Leger. In his last racecourse appearance, he beat Voltigeur in what was probably the most famous duel race in the history of British thoroughbred racing, known as 'The Great Match'. He was sold in 1858 for 150,000 francs to Napoleon III's National Stud, where he remained until his death in 1870. The Flying Dutchman is regarded as one of the greatest British racehorses of the 19th century.
