Portrait of a man in full dress, wearing a cape and a high-collared jacket embroidered with gold foliage; possibly a minister of King Louis-Philippe, depicted in a half-length portrait facing left, decorated with the Cross of St Louis and an Officer of the Royal Order of the Legion of Honour.
Miniature on ivory, signed and dated on the left-hand edge: ‘Mortarieu. 1834.’
Oval 10 x 8 cm (curved ivory)
Wide moulded brass border with acanthus leaf decoration within a rectangular frame, made of veneered wood with a hanging loop.

Mortarieu, a talented artist, previously unrecorded.
The costume adapts the codes of the full dress uniform worn by ministers of the First Empire, with variations in the embroidery and the collar. A rare example of a ceremonial civilian outfit in use during the reign of Louis-Philippe.
