Mid-19th-century French school, modelled on classical antiquity Diane of Gabies Bronze with a brown patina Bears the inscription ‘Réduction Sauvage’ on the pedestal H.: 26 cm Related work: Italy, Diana of Gabii, marble, H. 174 x W. 52 x D. 48 cm, Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. Ma 529. The ancient marble sculpture was discovered in 1792 on Prince Borghese’s estate at Gabies, near Rome. Acquired by Napoleon in 1807, the work was sent to France and has been on display at the Louvre since 1820. The Diana of Gabies, whose beauty was praised by critics, proved a great success. The model was widely reproduced throughout the 19th century.
