Description
Large wax seal of Frederick V of Habsburg (1415–1493). The Emperor is seated on a grand, ornately carved throne surmounted by a triple canopy; he is clad in the coronation mantle, wearing a closed crown, and holds a large sceptre with a fleur-de-lis finial and the orb. Eight shields surround the composition: two bear the arms of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria; in the left-hand field, two seated lions bear a shield of Lower Austria on their backs; below, a third lion bears a shield of Carinthia; above, a banner bears the inscription ‘aeiou’ (alles Erdreich ist Österreich untertan: all the earth is subject to Austria). On the right, following the same arrangement, a shield of Styria is placed above a shield of Carniola. On either side of the sovereign’s legs are engraved two shields representing Tyrol and the House of Habsburg. Reverse featuring the eagle of Tyrol in full view.
