Watercolour and gouache highlights on white, rough-textured (Torchon) paper, which absorbs pigments well. Ravier always used high-quality materials that he had imported from England. Consequently, the watercolour colours here remain vibrant and luminous across several layers of glazing (a very diluted and transparent layer of colour applied over a layer that has already dried). The yellow-green hues become denser and richer, giving his watercolour a real depth that contrasts with the blue sky.
The upper part of the watercolour depicts a clear, washed-out sky through which the grain of the (high-quality) paper is visible, contrasting with the bold yet subtle hues to create even greater depth and nuance.
Note the pure white of the rock overlooking the river, rendered in gouache with controlled brushstrokes to enhance the luminous atmosphere. The cobalt-blue swirls create shadows on the side of the rock, echoed at two points within the composition! This work possesses an eminently Turnerian spirit within an ordinary yet very real landscape, as it is precisely situated.
