Description
An ormolu Greek clock in the shape of an antique vase with a pomegranate popping out of it, the handles with faun heads and intertwined snakes. The enamel dial signed "Leneveu à Paris" with Roman and Arabic numerals, topped with a ribbon bow and acanthus leaves. The base is fluted and edged with ribbons of laurel and foliage. White marble counter base. Standing on small feet.
Minor wear visible, late 18th century movement with restorations and alterations to the mechanism, notably the escapement and spandrel.

After a model by Robert Osmond (1711-1789) master foundryman from 1746, sworn in 1756, made from a drawing kept in the Doucet library under number 143. This type of Greek vase clock is well known.
A similar model is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Die Bronzearbeiten des Spätbarock und Klassizismus, Volume 1, Munich, 1986, reproduced on pages 196 - 197, fig.3.13.2.
There are other clocks comparable or similar to ours with variants in the collections of the Marquis de Biencourt, kart Lagerfeld, the Thurn und taxis collection in Regensburg. It can also be found in the Louvre and the Musée de Chantilly. - Expert : LACHAUD François
