Description
Poussielgue-Rusand workshop, after a drawing by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.
Second half of the XIXᵉ century.
Pair of neo-Gothic gilt bronze candlesticks. Each candlestick rests on a tripod foot with leafy bird's feet, with nervous and moving lines, ending in wide plant scrolls. The central shaft rises vertically before opening out into an openwork composition of symmetrical volutes evoking an ornamental tree.
Height: 85 cm
The arms of light extend over several registers and end in bobèches in the shape of flowers in full bloom. The scrolls are enriched with spiral motifs and decorative pinecones housed in volutes, accentuating the plant-like and abundant character of the whole. In the centre, an enamelled four-lobed motif adorned with a small cross structures the composition before the upper arms converge towards a higher central light.
The foot and stem are based on a design by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc for Placide Poussielgue-Rusand (1824-1889), dated 1862. This design, preserved in the Poussielgue-Rusand collection of the Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie under the title Petit chandelier d'autel en cuivre doré, is a single-light model (PM43361).
The pair presented here is a monumental reinterpretation of this design: the Placide Poussielgue-Rusand workshop transformed the initial model into a rich bouquet with six lights, thus amplifying the decorative élan and liturgical solemnity of the composition.
Placide Poussielgue-Rusand and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc are best known for their collaboration on the reliquary of the Holy Crown for Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
