Description
A small, moulded ebony cabinet, decorated with hardstone marquetry panels featuring a floral design; it opens via a flap revealing three small drawers and four compartments, and a drawer concealing further compartments. Italy, late 19th – early 20th century. 39 × 40 × 27 cm. (Small chips around the keyhole and a missing section on the semi-circular arch on the front) These hardstone marquetry panels are associated with the work of Giovanni Ugolini (1844–1920), who excelled in this fine art whilst working at the former Grand Ducal Manufactory in Florence. Awarded prizes at the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893 and then in Atlanta in 1895, Giovanni Ugolini exhibited a large cabinet at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900.
