Jean COCTEAU (1889‒1963) & ATELIER MADELINE-JOLLY. The Couple with the Dog. A large circular dish on a foot from the *Le Satiricon* series, made of red earthenware and partially glazed with stylised figures in shades of black, green, red and blue. Original edition, signed and numbered 13/15 on the reverse, 1961. Diameter: 36.5 cm. Bibliography: Annie Guédras, Jean Cocteau, Ceramics: Catalogue Raisonné, Teillet-Dermit, Paris, 1989; this piece is listed under number 125 and reproduced on page 88. Marie Madeline-Jolly and Philippe Madeline met and became friends with Jean Cocteau in 1957. Together, in the couple’s studio in Villefranche-sur-Mer, they created over a hundred models in numbered editions and almost as many unique pieces until the artist’s death in 1963. As early as 1958, and for the first time, Jean Cocteau’s ceramics were exhibited simultaneously at the Lucie Weil Gallery ‘Au Pont des Arts’ in Paris and at the Johnson Gallery in Chicago. Numerous exhibitions followed, both in France and internationally. ‘Pottery saved my life! It spares me from having to use ink, which is far too dangerous, as everything one writes is systematically distorted by those who read it’, Jean Cocteau, interviewed in 1958.
