Pablo PICASSO (1881‒1973) & ATELIER MADOURA. Sculptural jug, ‘Visage aux points’ model, in white earthenware, with decoration engraved with a knife and partially overglazed with brush-applied engobes in shades of white, red, blue, green and black on a grey background. Madoura edition, Vallauris, with the date ‘9.1.69’ stamped beneath the handle, and the stamps ‘Édition Picasso’ and ‘Madoura plein feu’ on the reverse, numbered 7/350. H.: 28.5 cm. (Stains and a small chip around the rim of the base) Provenance: Ceramic presented by Pablo Picasso during a visit to the Château de Vauvenargues in 1969 and kept in the family ever since. In 1946, Pablo Picasso visited the exhibition ‘Poteries, fleurs et parfums’ at the Nerolium in Vallauris, where he met Suzanne and Georges Ramié, owners of the Madoura ceramics workshop in the village. Eager to work with clay, he carried out his first experiments there the following year and subsequently decided to devote himself fully to this new pursuit, with the help, in particular, of Jules Agard. Between 1947 and 1971, he produced nearly four thousand original works, some of which were produced in multiple numbered copies as part of an exclusive edition by the Madoura workshop.
