Description
Claude SANTARELLI, known as SANTA (1925‒1979). Rectangular bas-relief in polished brass, featuring a stylised design resembling welded twigs. Signed ‘SANTA’ in intaglio on a panel, circa 1970. Wall-mounting system on the reverse. 63.5 × 26 cm. Claude Santerelli, known as Santa, studied sculpture between 1942 and 1950 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, first in Gaumont’s studio and then in Yencesse’s, alongside artists including Féraud, Guino and César. He settled in Saint-Omer in 1951 and, at the same time, began a career as a designer at the Arques glassworks. In the late 1950s, he turned definitively to abstraction, favouring the more malleable brass, and the following years saw numerous exhibitions in France and abroad. In 1970, he was awarded the André Susse Prize for Young Sculptors. He died in March 1979, aged just 54.
