LESSEPS (de) Ferdinand (1815–1894) A set of two signed autograph letters, comprising a draft addressed to the Emperor of Brazil and a letter addressed to a colleague, dated 21 March 1888. Transcriptions (original spelling retained): ‘My dear Colleague, General Turr has sent me a newspaper report recounting a conversation he had with the King of Italy and Minister Crispi – the ? then? The page that ? of this article prompts one to ? Yours ever ? Ferdinand de Lesseps Paris, 21 March 1888” “Emperor of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro Recommended engineers. Panama. Deeply touched by this precious memento, your devoted colleague. Lesseps” Enclosed is a letter from Robert Marjolin addressed to Ferdinand de Lesseps (1812–1895): “Tuesday 15 May 16 Rue Chaptal Sir The Emperor of Brazil, having asked me today to gather at my home a few people with whom he wishes to speak in private, I hope you will be able to comply with His Majesty’s wish and that you will do us the honour of joining us for the evening on Thursday 17th at 8 o’clock sharp, the day and time specified by the Emperor Please accept, Sir, the assurance of my highest consideration Marjolin". Enclosed is a portrait of Ferdinand de Lesseps by H. Roger Viollet.
