MAURIAC François (1885–1970) Signed autograph letter of condolence addressed to the widow of Georges Goyau. Transcription (original spelling retained): ‘26 Oct. Dear Madam I have heard the sad news on the radio. Mr Goyau lived so close to God that we could only accept the thought of his death with a sense of faith and hope. But those whom he helped, recognised and strengthened will often seek him out and suffer from no longer feeling him by their side. I had known him for over thirty years. He was always full of kindness and understanding towards me. His memory will always be dear to me. My wife joins me in expressing our respectful and deepest sympathy François Mariac” Folds, later pencil mark. Enclosed is a literary journal from 1952 dedicated to him.
