Description
LOTI Pierre (1850–1923) A collection of seven autograph letters signed by Pierre Loti or Julien Viaud, addressed to his aunt or friends. Transcriptions (original spelling of the letters retained): ‘Golfe-Jouau, 10 September 1919 Sir, I am quite happy to accept your offer as far as I am concerned, but you must be so kind as to also seek the authorisation of Mr Calmann-Lévy, my publisher (3 rue Auber), to whom the material rights to my works belong by contract. Yours faithfully, Pierre Loti” “Rochefort, 19 September 1920 Dear Sir and Friend, (Since your last visit to my home and especially since your pilgrimage to the sacred chamber, I feel the need to address you in this way and I hope you will kindly allow me to do so.) I have received your letter from Paris concerning La Roche-Courbon and the one regarding my burial. On that occasion, I was moved even more deeply, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I shall send my son to the Île d’Oléron this week, and he will make the necessary arrangements to ensure that my plot is already marked at the far end of the old ancestral garden. As for La Roche-Courbon, if I am still of this world when the trial comes to an end, I shall do my utmost to save it. Please, dear Sir and Friend, convey my warmest regards to Madame Maulmond and accept my heartfelt gratitude for yourself. Pierre Loti” “Dear Aunt, The matter with Franck has been settled by correspondence – so unless there is an absolute impediment of duty, I shall go to Bordeaux next Sunday – at what time should I arrive? I should very much like 5 o’clock in the evening If you would be so kind as to put your little batteries down, I shall send you a telegram by Friday at the latest giving you a definite yes or no regarding this trip – Thank you again, dear Aunt, and to both of you, my very great affection, Julien” “Dear Madam, Amidst the anxieties I am currently facing, a trip to Paris is a painful and odious chore; for any candidate other than yours, I would not have given it a second thought. You could not have done anything more kind than to release me from my promise, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. However, I would be so sorry to risk, through my absence, the loss of a possible election, that I shall stand ready to leave, and I beg you not to hesitate to telegraph me if you deem it necessary. Please accept, dear Madam, my deepest and most affectionate regards Pierre Loti Thank you to Mademoiselle de Reiset for her kind letter. How happy I would be to have all three of you visit me this summer.” “Dear Sir, Please forgive me for not thanking you straight away for your lovely verses. In the heat of the moment, I would have done so much better than I have today. Thank you for including my name. And thank you for always sending me your Revue, which remains excellent. I do not know how it fares in practical terms; but it seems to me, and I hope, that you must be pleased with it. I very much regret having so many commitments and so little free time to write, for I would have liked to have sent you something. Being far lazier about reading than you can imagine, I do not read your entire Review, far from it. But it is one of those I most often leaf through; from time to time I find things in it that charm me – and besides, you never give space to anything bad or banal. Please accept, I beg you, my warmest regards, Pierre Loti” “Rochefort, Monday evening Miss, You have been utterly kind to me and I do not know how to thank you. I went to Bordeaux yesterday where, thanks to you, I received a very warm welcome. My first impression of everyone was exactly what I had hoped for, and I do hope I made a similar impression on them. I am writing to Mademoiselle Ménier to ask her permission to return. I shall be in Paris shortly and I hope you will allow me to come and thank you in person. Please accept, Mademoiselle, the expression of my gratitude and my most respectful regards. Julien Viaud” “Dear Sir, Alas! This is what Monseigneur Baudrillart writes to me from Rome; it is impossible to push the favour of the holy water from … any further, and I had hoped for better than that. My friend L. Barthou stopped here for an hour at the station a few days ago, on his way to Morocco, and we spoke at length about your election; it was he who told me about the move by …, the Hermont-Bordeaux alliance which, in his view, makes the situation frankly dire for you. He wanted me to tell you this, advising you to withdraw this time; I hesitated to do so, as it pained me to take that hope away from you; yet it seems to me that I must make up my mind today. I fear that in the first round alone you will obtain votes, but not enough for what you deserve. I fear you may feel I have been of very little help to you; but I have known for years how little influence I have in that circle, where I am a member who is always absent, always on the outside of all the petty compromises, and yet always envied! We still have a month that could change everything; I have now somewhat regained my composure after some trying times; if you see anything I can still do, please let me know in no uncertain terms. Please, dear sir, accept my sincere and regretful regards, Pierre Loti” Enclosed is a handwritten letter by Jeanne Boivin addressed to the publisher Calmann-Levy at 3 Rue Auber in Paris. “Bastia, 1 October 1918, 15 Place St Nicolas …, I would be most grateful if you could provide me with Mr Pierre Loti’s military rank, as well as the necessary details to send him a letter Thanking you in advance, please accept … my best regards. Jeanne Boivin”. Enclosed are two photographs of Pierre Loti and a copy of the novel *Pêcheur d'Islande*, illustrated by E. Rudaux, *Nouvelle Collection Illustrée*, Editions Calmann-Lévy, circa 1910 (as is).
