Description
Attributed to Pietro de LIGNIS (1577–1627) The Adoration of the Magi Copper 49 x 36 cm Minor damage to the frame edge Note: Of Flemish origin, Pieter van Houten, also known as Pierre Dubois, or Pietro de Lignis (his Latinised name), settled in Rome around 1599, where he is mentioned in the registers of the Academy of Saint Luke in 1607. The fluid rhythm of his compositions and his smooth brushwork are reminiscent of the works of Cavalier d’Arpin. His paintings feature crowds of figures with a horizon line set quite high. The opening towards a bluish background, here on the right, links him to the Northern landscape painters active in Rome, such as Paul Bril or Adam Elsheimer. His northern origins are evident in his love of beautiful, colourful costumes, particularly turbans and headwear, and the precise depiction of brocades and luxurious fabrics, such as the colourful, striped sleeves of the Magi. Stylistically, his painting belongs to the transition between late Mannerism and clear Classicism, and is thus the antithesis of the Caravaggist movement of the early 17th century. We know of several paintings by our artist depicting the Adoration of the Magi, including a vertical one from 1616 (copper, 70 x 54 cm, Madrid, Prado Museum) and another in landscape format (copper, 41 x 60 cm, sale in Paris, Artcurial, 9 June 2021, lot no. 132).
