Description
ERWIN KLEIN IWI (DREPANIS COCCINEA) Sculpture in hardstone and gilded bronze. The body is in rhodonite and the wings in finely carved marble, resting on 18-carat gold legs. The beak is made of coral (with a small reattached tip) and the eyes are made of glass paste. The bird is perched on a bare branch, emerging from a nephrite jade plinth encircled by ruby cabochons. Circa 1980. Bears the plaque "Erwin Klein 77". Height: Note: Erwin Klein trained in gemstone carving in the 1960s at the Robert Juchem workshop under his teacher Richard Hahn. He specialised in animal sculpture in semi-precious stones, characterised by striking realism. In the 1980s, he produced several bird sculptures in collaboration with Vacheron Constantin, the craftsmanship of which is particularly reminiscent of our iwi specimen.
