STORCK & SINSHEIMER WEDDING CUP KNOWN AS THE "CUNEGONDE" In silver and vermeil, depicting a young woman carrying a basket with a fluted pattern. The finely chiselled body features a bell-shaped skirt adorned with foliage and flowers. Silversmith’s hallmarks, Hanau, second half of the 19th century. Weight: 199.4 g (800 silver). Note: From the legend of this wedding cup, which originated several centuries ago in Nuremberg, a masterpiece of silversmithing emerged. Princess Kunigunde fell in love with an ambitious young silversmith. Her father, a wealthy nobleman, disapproved of the relationship and had her lover imprisoned, plunging his daughter into deep despair. The suffering caused by this forbidden love left her visibly pale and weak, and her condition worsened day by day. Fearing his daughter might die of a broken heart, the old nobleman declared: “If your goldsmith can craft a cup from which two people can drink at the same time without spilling a single drop, I shall set him free and you shall become his wife.” The young silversmith drew upon all his skill and created a masterpiece. He carved a young girl with a smile as beautiful as Kunigunde’s. The skirt worn by this maiden was hollow and served as a cup. The second vessel was a small bucket that the young girl held above her head, her arms outstretched. By lifting the skirt, the basket could swivel, thus allowing two people to drink from the cup without spilling a single drop.
