Description
Imperial Porcelain Manufactory of Sèvres. Half-bottle-shaped jug in glazed porcelain with a blue background, decorated in gold with water lilies and garlands of flowers, handles in the shape of lion’s paws, gilded bronze mount decorated with a laurel wreath, marked beneath the base ‘de Sèvres 10’ and stamped ‘AB’. Empire period (1810). H. 20, D. 21 cm. Damage and restoration. This service was used by the Marshals of the Empire. Napoleon presumably took a small set of the plates comprising this service with him to St Helena, as indicated by a plate preserved at Malmaison bearing a handwritten label reading ‘brought to St Helena’. The remainder is still in use at the Tuileries Palace and was inventoried in 1821.
