AUBUSSON, based on drawings by François BOUCHER (1703–1770) and Jean-Joseph DUMONS (1687–1779). The Aviary. Wool and silk tapestry depicting a Chinese man releasing birds from a pagoda-style aviary in front of a Chinese woman and her two children in an exotic landscape. 18th century. 232 x 178 cm. Signs of wear, restoration work and a reinforcing strip along the border. This tapestry comes from *La Tenture chinoise*, which was based on drawings by François Boucher presented in 1742 at the Salon du Louvre and subsequently translated by Jean-Joseph Dumons into cartoons for the Royal Tapestry Workshop at Beauvais, where the tapestry was woven in at least ten panels, between 1743 and 1775. The design was reproduced at Aubusson. An identical 18th-century tapestry from the Picon workshop in Aubusson, based on the same cartoon, is on display at the Louvre in the Sully Wing, Level 1, Room 613 (inventory number: OAR33A) Jean-Joseph Dumons was appointed painter to the Aubusson Manufactory by Louis XV in 1731, following an apprenticeship in the studio of François de Troy. The latter adapted and completed François Boucher’s *La Tenture chinoise* following a commission from Jean-François Picon, a merchant and manufacturer in Aubusson.
