Description
François LINKE (1855–1946). Office armchair in moulded and carved wood, decorated with gilded bronze. It stands on four curved legs, with recessed armrests on rollers, and a seat and backrest with a cane-woven base. Signed ‘F. Linke’ on the gilt bronze of the front right leg.
In the Louis XV–Louis XVI transitional style. 88 x 60 x 66 cm.
François Linke was born in Bohemia and is regarded as one of the greatest cabinetmakers of the late 19th century. In 1881, he opened his own workshop at 170 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, followed by a studio on the Place Vendôme. The Ancien Régime was his main source of inspiration, whether in the Louis XV or Louis XVI styles, which he copied with great skill. François Linke was subsequently inspired by the Art Nouveau style, which he later blended with the Rococo style. He was honoured by critics at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair and was awarded the Legion of Honour six years later.
