Description
François LINKE (1855–1946). A flat-topped writing desk in veneered wood, inlaid on all sides with a latticework design, featuring three recessed drawers separated by acanthus leaves. It rests on four legs ending in gilded bronze lion’s paws and is flanked by bearded faun heads at the corners. The side rails are adorned with masks of Bacchus and bronze mouldings concealing two pull-handles. The ornate top, whose moulding is accentuated at the spandrels by male masks within foliage cartouches, is upholstered in beige leather. Signed ‘F. Linke’ on the top’s moulding. A design comparable to the writing desk by Charles CRESSENT held at Versailles. Louis XV style. H. 76, W. 140, D. 80 cm. François Linke was born in Bohemia and is regarded as one of the greatest cabinetmakers of the late 19th century. In 1881, he opened his own workshop at 170 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, followed by a studio on the Place Vendôme. The Ancien Régime was his main source of inspiration, whether in the Louis XV style or the Louis XVI style, which he copied with great skill. François Linke was subsequently inspired by the Art Nouveau style, which he later blended with the Rococo style. He was honoured by critics at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair and was awarded the Legion of Honour six years later.
