Flemish School, c. 1600, a follower of Joos van Cleve The Holy Children Kissing Oak panel, single plank, unparqueted 41 x 53 cm Scratches and very slight loss of material. The composition of our painting, depicting the infant Jesus and Saint John the Baptist embracing, is derived from a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, probably executed in Milan around 1490 (held at Windsor Castle, United Kingdom). This embrace between Jesus and John the Baptist can be interpreted as a highly original depiction of the union between the Old and New Testaments (in Scripture, Saint John the Baptist is regarded as the last prophet of the Old Testament, whilst Jesus is foretold by all the preceding prophets and recognised as the ultimate Revelation).z A common motif in the Lombard school, it was reproduced by Leonardo’s Milanese followers: Marco d’Oggiono, Bernardino de Conti and Bernardino Luini. Joos Van Cleve, an artist working in Antwerp, drew inspiration from these artists during a probable stay in Italy, where he was influenced by the Leonardesque style. This subject was revisited on several occasions in the painter’s studio, as evidenced by the various versions that exist, which differ in their inclusion of decorative elements: an architectural frame, curtains, cushions or canopies, platforms, or the Lamb. We cite, for example, the painting by Joos Van Cleve held in Brussels (c. 1515–1520, 72.5 cm high, 54 cm wide, Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels) and those in Aachen and Utrecht (Workshop of Joos Van Cleve, c. 1515–1520, Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, Aachen; Workshop of Joos Van Cleve, c. 1525–1530, Museum of St Catherine’s Convent, Utrecht, Netherlands).
