A significant clock known as the ‘Marshals’ clock’, in chiselled bronze, gilded with matt and polished gold patina, resting on an elongated base of griotte marble accented by a frieze of leaves and bunches of grapes, adorned with masks of Mercury flanking two sphinxes playing with a wreath of flowers. At the centre of the clock is a white enamelled dial with Roman numerals, signed ‘Faizans à Paris’ (active from the late 18th to the early 19th century), it is surmounted by an eagle with outstretched wings and flanked by the allegories of Reading and Poetry. Date: first third of the 19th century. 53 x 65 x 14.5 cm. In very good overall condition, with minor chips to the enamel. This model, sometimes referred to as the ‘study and philosophy clock’, was very much in vogue from the mid-1780s onwards. It is worth noting that a clock of this model, made by the same clockmaker, appears in the post-mortem inventory of Marshal Ney, Prince of Moskowa and Duke of Elchingen. It is directly inspired by a preparatory drawing attributed to the Parisian bronze caster François Rémond (1747–1812)
