Binding Provenance: Probably Louis Franois et Hippolyte Cassas sale, 14 - 16 January 1878, Paris, Htel Drouot, (Me Lecocq), nř 164 (Restored view of the Great Gallery of Palmyra, Indian ink wash drawing). In 1784, Louis Franois Cassas accompanied the new French ambassador to Constantinople, the comte de Choiseul - Gouffier. He travelled through most of the countries of the Middle East, including Syria, Palestine and Egypt, bringing back around 250 drawings, which form an important record of the region in the 18th century. Some of these drawings were published in the two volumes Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phnicie, de la Palestine et de la Basse Aegypte, published in Paris in 1799. The Valley of the Tombs, to the south-west of Palmyra, is famous for its multi-storey funerary towers, monuments without equal in the rest of the Middle East. The Prout gallery presented a second version of this composition (46.5 x 73 cm) in 1986 (nř 30).
