Description
19th century French school based on a model made before 1800, by Christophe Dihl (1753-1830) or Charles-Gabriel Sauvage dit Lemire (1741 -1827) Child drawing White marble Inscribed 'Prof.B.Ciai Ż on the right side Height 42 cm Dust, small cracks on the right foot and arches This work has often been associated with the representation of a child drawing to form a pair in the no-classical style illustrating the subject of the study, very fashionable under the Empire and shortly before. Versions are known mainly in biscuit, in a version made by the Dihl and Gurhard manufactory. The first known bisque model (Mnich Rezidenzmuseum) bore an inscription on the shelf, added later in metal letters: ŽEs lebe Karl TheodorŻ, Charles Thodore de Dalberg, last reading archbishop of Bavaria, probably its first owner. Here, the inscription offers a different approach: the young child writes the name ŽCanova Ż in homage to the greatest No-Classical sculptor in Europe.
