Description
Fragment of tapestry decorated with inscriptions, depicting women and men, some playing musical instruments, such as a mival bagpipe under a tendard adorned with clawed hands, circa 1520, early 16th century, attributed to Brussels.
H:1.15 m L:1.62 m
This fragment is part of a large tapestry made up of multiple scenes, and it is not possible here to link it to an identified tapestry. It is somewhat difficult to make out, but the motifs on the stretcher show two hands clasping, a symbol of Faith or Fidelity: it could be an oath, the alliance of two families, or a moral statement. These instruments can be used to veil tapestries illustrating ŽThe Triumph of Reputation Ż from the Triumphs hanging by Ptrarca.
