Description
Rare tapestry ŽThe Triumph of Marc-Aurle Ż History of Marc-Aurle, attributed to the workshop of Michel Wauters, one of the most important in Antwerp, after Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596-1675), from 1650, 2nd half of the 17th century.
H: 3.38 m; W: 5.66 m
The emperor Marc-Aurle stands on his triumphal chariot with his laurel wreath surrounded by his soldiers and the defeated enchans, under the banner SPQR Senatus Populusque Romanus, rich laurel wreath and trumpet border, garlands of flowers and birds, cartouche Triomphus Marci Aureli.
The scene was inspired by Antonio de Guevara's Golden Book and illustrates Rome's victory over the Parthians, probably also a meditation on the bitter fruits of war. It is thought that Abraham van Diepenbeeck was inspired by 'The Triumph of Scipio Ż by Giulio Romano, painted for Franois I in 1532, and 'The Triumphs of Csar Ż by Mantegna, as well as by Rubens, whose student he was in Antwerp.
The emperor Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD), a warrior and Stoic philosopher, fought in Syria and Egypt. The various subjects of the History of Marcus Aurelius include: Marcus Aurelius in conversation with doctors, Marcus Aurelius presenting his son Commodus to the philosophers, the triumph of Marcus Aurelius and the procession to the Temple of Janus.
Similar tapestries are preserved in Milan, at the Sforza Castle (Nřinv. 0016), Palazzo Marino and Palazzo Sormani. Other examples can be found in the Museums of Rome, Mannheim and Lisbon but with different borders.
Good condition, wear restorations, weaknesses in the browns, probably reduced at the top, right at the bottom white cloth medallion probably obliterating a workshop mark in the border, bears a nř 6317 sewn on the lining, velcro.
