Description
Senneh carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), North-West Persia, circa 1930–1960. (Slight signs of wear.) Length: 110 cm; Width: 57 cm. The town of Senneh, or Sanandaj, has long been renowned for the finesse of its carpets, both in terms of the quality of the knotting or weaving and its decorative motifs. Kurdistan wool is long and lustrous, yet dry and coarse, a quality accentuated by a close shearing. Senneh carpets, with a warp often made of silk and a single, very tightly drawn cotton weft thread, are thus very finely knotted. This carpet is adorned with a small, elongated navy blue medallion featuring small vases of flowers against a plain pink background. The central design is framed by ribbons and, at each corner, by vases set against a plain navy blue background. A narrow ivory border featuring a garland of flowers encircles the composition.
