Description
BOUCHAUD Jean (1891–1977) – ‘The African Village’. Gouache and pastel, signed lower right. 37.5 x 46 cm. From the Stupres collection. Jean Bouchaud was a French painter and illustrator. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Fernand Cormon from 1912, he made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1913. In 1922, he was awarded a scholarship by the Colonial Society of French Artists and travelled to French West Africa and Morocco, where he painted market scenes, landscapes and ethnographic portraits. Working in oils, watercolours and charcoal drawings, he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon Colonial in the 1920s and 1930s. His works, influenced by his time in the colonies, are characterised by warm colours and a figurative style.
