Description
Achille VALOIS (1785–1862) Two designs for the Place du
Duc d’Angoulême in Toulouse: France covering the lion
of Castile and freeing it from the Hydra, viewed from the front and from the side.
Pen and brown ink over black pencil lines, with highlights of
white gouache on tracing paper, 21.5 x 13 cm.
Captioned at the bottom: ‘France shields the Lion of Castile
with her aegis and frees it from the hydra with which it was entangled”.
Annotated on the left-hand margin: “This is the other one, which conforms
to the model that was to be executed in rough-hewn Carrara marble
’. Slightly sun-faded, with small stains and creases (
ferrogallic ink). The city of Toulouse launched a
sculpture competition in 1824 to commemorate the victorious campaign
of the Duke of Angoulême in Spain in 1823. The sculpture was to
adorn the centre of the Place du Duc d’Angoulême, now
Place Wilson. Achille VALOIS won the competition in 1825
with a design depicting: ‘France slaying the hydra of
anarchy which entwines the Lion of Castile’. The project fell
behind schedule and the foundation stone was laid by the Duchess of
Berry on 23 September 1828. The project was ultimately
abandoned following the fall of Charles X in 1830. Enclosed is a
drawing of the same design, along with two designs depicting the Duke
of Angoulême restoring Ferdinand VII to the Spanish throne,
and another drawing. Provenance: former collection of Paul
