Description
Jean-François PERDRIX (1746–1809). White stag, doe and fawn (30.6 × 20.5); family of stags (30.2 × 20). Pair of oak panels, painted on the reverse (with some loss). One signed lower left and dated 1784; on the reverse, an early attribution to Oudry. Framed (with some loss). In 1763, Jean-François Perdrix was elected a member of the Académie Saint-Luc and, a year later, appointed to the service of Prince Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, the king’s first cousin. His official title was ‘Painter of the Hunt and the Hound Pack’. The young prince, like his cousin King Louis XV, was a great hunting enthusiast and had the Château de Chantilly as his principal residence. It was there that Perdrix was to produce the bulk of his work. During the Revolution, Perdrix changed sides and became a fervent republican. The château was converted into a prison, and the artist became its director. He was known and feared for his intransigence, his rigour and a certain fanaticism which led him to gather together all the paintings he had created for the château, as well as a work by Rubens depicting a “Maternity” which had been hanging in the chapel, and set them alight on the terraces of Chantilly.
