DÉMIDOFF (Anatole). - Voyage dans la Russie méridionale et la Crimée, par la Hongrie, la Valachie et la Moldavie exécuté en 1837, -- Voyage pittoresque et archéologique en Russie exécuté en 1839. Paris, Gihaut Frères, s. d. [1838-1848, & 1842]. Together 2 volumes in-folio, half calf, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding). The only albums of these journeys to southern Russia, organised at the expense of Count Demidoff, whose plates constitute a precious ethnological document. - 92 lithographed plates on Chine collé by Auguste RAFFET, of 100 (numbered 1 to 17, 19 to 61 and 69 to 100). Nine plates bear intermediate titles: - Hungary, Danube 1837" (plate 2), - "Wallachia. 1837" (pl. 9), - "Moldavia. 1837" (pl. 20), - "Southern Russia. Bessarabia." (pl. 25), - "Crimea 1st part" (pl. 31), - "Camp of Vosnessensk. 1837" (pl. 55), - "Crimea 2nd part" (pl. 69), - "Constantinople and Smyrna" (pl. 81), - "Portraits of the Members of the Scientific Expedition in Southern Russia" (pl. 88, including those of Démidoff and Raffet). Plates 18 & 62 to 68 are unbound in this copy, as are the 64 pp. of explanatory text. -- 48 lithographed and tinted plates by André DURAND, of 100 (numbered 1 to 27, 29, 31 to 36, 38 to 41, 44 to 50, 52, 60 & 62). Boards 28, 30, 37, 42, 43, 51, 53 to 59, 61 & 63 to 100 have not been bound in this copy. Bindings damaged; heavy foxing on several plates.
