Description
AFTER FRÉDÉRIC AUGUSTE BARTHOLDI (1834-1904) The Seven Swabians Group in stearic plaster. Signed "Aug Bartholdi" and dated "1855". Titled "The Seven Swabians"; bears illegible inscriptions on the book and cartouches on the terrace. Height. 25 cm; terrace. 38 x 19 cm. Accidents and restorations. This group, based on a work by Colmar-born sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi illustrating a German fable, is made from a rare and interesting material: stearic plaster, a process that consists of immersing a plaster sculpture in a stearin bath, giving the object great strength and an appearance that resembles the colour and polish of marble. Related work: Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834 - 1904), The Seven Swabians, bronze, 1855, Colmar, Musée Bartholdi.
