GASTON BERNHEIM JEUNE DE VILLERS (1870–1953), ‘The Fort of Socoa as seen from Ciboure’, 1914, Oil on canvas. Signed ‘Gaston de Villers’ in the lower right-hand corner and dated ‘1914’. Annotation on the reverse on a label: ‘Gaston de Villers’. Some missing areas and signs of wear. Provenance: Private collection. H: 46 L: 61 cm Note: The Socoa lighthouse is situated in the bay of Ciboure & Saint-Jean-de-Luz – Basque Country. Note: Son of the famous art dealer Alexandre Bernheim and brother of Joseph Bernheim-Jeune. Together with his brother, he ran the prestigious Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in Paris, one of the most influential galleries in promoting Impressionism and the modern avant-garde. In particular, in 1901 the Bernheim brothers organised the first major Parisian exhibition dedicated to Vincent van Gogh, and went on to support artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice Utrillo. Under the pseudonym ‘Gaston de Villers’, he was also active as a painter and engraver. The Bibliothèque nationale de France lists him as both an artist and an art dealer. The Bernheim-Jeune gallery played a major role in the recognition of the Impressionists, Post-Impressionists and modern art movements in Paris.
