Eudoxe Marcille Collection, no. 268 (according to an old inscription on a label on the reverse of the frame).
This is probably the English painter William Darley, who is known to have been in London from 1836 to 1841, and then in Paris in 1849–1850; during this period he exhibited idealised heads and religious compositions at the Royal Academy exhibitions, and also featured at the British Institution in 1841 with a work entitled ‘The Carrying of the Cross’. In Paris, he exhibited at the Salon from 1838 to 1842 (in the latter year under the first name Guillaume-Henri).
