Lebrun-Jouve, Nicolas-Antoine Taunay (1755–1730), Paris, 2003, no. p. 817 (“Most of the composition is taken up by a river on which there are several boats laden with numerous labourers and boatmen retrieving stones from beneath the water. Near the bridge on the riverbank, there are also stonecutters working to load stones onto a cart drawn by several horses. Among them is a traveller riding a white horse. These figures are skilfully arranged and generously rendered. The distant planes are shrouded in a harmonious mist and feature towering rocks and mountains.”). We would like to thank Mrs Lebrun-Jouve, who confirmed the authenticity of our painting in 2012. Our painting may be a bozzetto for a larger composition, the location of which is currently unknown.
