CLÉMENT BOULANGER (Paris, 1805–Magnesia, 1842) AFTER A TOURNAMENT Panel Signed and dated lower left “Clément Boulanger 1840” After a tournament, panel, signed and dated 43 x 32.50 cm – 16.9 x 12.8 in. The wounded knight could be Chevalier Bayard. His coat of arms – azure, a chief argent charged with a lion issant gules; a cotice d’or broaching the whole – could be depicted on the red drapery. PROVENANCE Anonymous sale; Paris, Ader-Tajan, 20 December 1993, lot 368 (The Death of Chevalier Bayard), illustrated.
