A preparatory sketch (canvas, 48 x 39.5 cm) is held at the Charlier Museum in Brussels.
Émile Wauters was a pupil of Portaels in Brussels and later of Jean Léon Gérôme in Paris. He was a painter of history, portraits and Orientalist subjects.
The model’s grandfather was Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury under Jefferson, founder of New York University and a senator. He was depicted on the $500 banknote in 1862 and on the 1-cent stamp between 1967 and 1973.
