JOSEPH-FORTUNE-SERAPHIN LAYRAUD, known as FORTUNE LAYRAUD (La Roche-sur-le-Buis, 1833–Valenciennes, 1913) PORTRAIT OF FERDINAND OF SAXONY-COBURG AND GOTHA, KING OF PORTUGAL (1816–1885) Original canvas Signed lower right “Layraud” Portrait of Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, King of Portugal (1816–1885), original canvas, signed lower right “Layraud” 30 x 19.50 cm – 11.8 x 7.7 in Sketch for the portrait held at the Pena National Palace in Sintra (230 x 135.5 cm). Joseph-Fourtuné Layraud was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1863. He settled in Lisbon from 1873 to 1877, where he became the official portraitist to the Portuguese royal family. He painted the portrait of King Ferdinand II of Portugal in 1877. The work was exhibited at the Paris Salon the following year. Ferdinand II (1816–1885), a German prince who became King Consort of Portugal from 1837 to 1853 through his marriage to Queen Maria II, was nicknamed the ‘Artist King’. Between 1838 and 1885, he commissioned the construction of the Pena Palace in Sintra, which today houses his portrait.
