Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) and Anthony Gross (1905-1984) were influential British printmakers and close collaborators who met in Paris in the 1920s. Together with Józef Hecht, they pioneered modern printmaking techniques, playing a key role in the development of Hayter's famous Atelier 17 and experimental colour printing methods.
Key links and collaborations:
Meeting in Paris: Both artists attended the Académie Julian and the Cité Falguière in Paris in the mid-1920s. Atelier 17: Gross was a key collaborator in the early days of Atelier 17, which Hayter founded at 17 rue Campagne-Première in 1933.
Engraving techniques: They collaborated on the development of modern and advanced engraving and etching techniques, often working alongside artists such as Joseph Hecht.
Viscosity experiments: In the 1930s, they jointly explored simultaneous colour printing techniques (viscosity printing), researching methods of obtaining several colours on a single plate. Stanley William Hayter: Considered one of the most important printmakers of the 20th century. Founder of Atelier 17, which became a major centre for Surrealism and Abstract Expressionist artists. They developed viscosity printing, making it possible to produce complex, multicoloured prints.
Anthony Gross, painter, printmaker and animator of animated films, is renowned for his fine line. He has often exhibited with Hayter and has been a leading figure on the Parisian and British art scenes. His animated film La Joie de Vivre is a remarkable work. Both artists played a key role in elevating printmaking from a simple reproduction medium to an experimental art form in its own right, profoundly influencing the artistic landscape from the 1930s to the 1950s.
Provenance: This work by SW Hayter was a gift from Hayter to our vendor's grandfather who was friends with the great artists of the early 20th century. He received works by Balthus, Picabia, Braques, Leger etc...
