This model was made by Milles during his stay in Paris (1897-1904), which was marked by the poverty and begging he witnessed there. Driven by humanist values, he recognised himself in the work of his Belgian counterpart Constantin Meunier, whose work he discovered during his trip to Belgium in 1903. A similar print is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris (RF 2286).
