Alfred ROLL (1846–1919), ‘Environ de Baccarat’, 1869, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 90 x 140 (cracking, restoration).
Alfred Roll was nicknamed the ‘Zola of painting’ and embodied the third way between Academicism and Impressionism: Naturalism. Our painting was produced in 1869 in Rixens’ studio following the artist’s return from a trip to the Vosges and was originally titled ‘A Stream in a Valley’. The painting was created for the Troyon competition and exhibited at the 1870 Salon, where it received favourable reviews. The influence of the great realists, such as Courbet and Harpignies, with whom he had worked, is clearly evident. This painting can be regarded as one of the first major works in Roll’s body of work, in which landscapes are rare.
