Description
Henri François Riesener (1768–1828), ‘Portrait of a Woman in a Landscape’, oil on canvas, canvas stamp on the reverse, signed ‘Riesner’ in the top left-hand corner, 65.5 × 53.5 cm (restored).
Henri François Riesener was the son of the famous cabinetmaker of the late 18th century. He first learnt miniature portraiture under the portraitist Antoine Vestier before joining the studios of François André Vincent and then Jacques-Louis David. His training ensured he mastered the art of portraiture, and, under David’s influence, he became one of the most important portraitists of the Empire. This fine portrait is comparable to the portrait of a man from the Millon auction of 2 December 2025, lot 36.
